USTP holds 1st Innovation Summit


The University of Science and Technology of Southern Philippines in Cagayan de Oro (USTP CDO) held the 1st Innovation Summit in Region X with a theme “Rethinking Success in Innovation” on March 8, 2018 at the Dr. Ricardo E. Rotoras Memorial Hall (USTP CDO Gymnasium).

The one-day event gathered investors, industry senior executives, and representatives from the academe and entrepreneurs in Cagayan de Oro to explore challenges and opportunities in the fields of Power and Energy, Food Innovation and Information and Communications Technology. The summit showcased digital initiatives and research outputs of USTP CDO students in the areas of ICT and food innovation as well as products and services of various start-ups from the USTP Digital Incubation Hub.

One of the main highlights of the event was the grand launching of the three (3) recently established hubs in the University – the USTP Digital Incubation (CDO Bites); the Center for Entrepreneurship and Technology; and the Power Institute. The hubs are additions to the Northern Mindanao Food Innovation Center (FIC) which featured their latest food products during the summit and the Career Center that also held its Reverse Career Fair.

In the afternoon, parallel sessions were held tackling issues on challenges facing the National Electrification Administration (NEA), electric cooperatives and power distribution units, and member consumer owners; role of information and communication technology in innovation; and food security.

Culminating the event was the recognition of the three best student researches from among the 40 exhibitors: the Integrated ICT-based Platform for Smart Agriculture: Soil Fertility Monitoring System for the ICT Sector; the Simplified Banki Turbine for Rural Electrification for the Power Sector; and the Instant Binignit for the Food Sector.
