The University of Science and Technology of Southern Philippines in Balubal, Cagayan de Oro (USTP Balubal) participated in a three-day training workshop titled “Advancing Sustainability and SDG-Driven Research in High-Impact Journals” held on April 6–8, 2026, at Paras Beach Resort, Camiguin Island. The workshop gathered research leaders and coordinators to enhance their competencies in producing globally competitive research aligned with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

Representing USTP Balubal were Mary Jean A. Apuan, Research, Innovation, and Extension Coordinator; Angela Katrina M. Dongdong, Research Coordinator; Karren Belarmino, Guidance Counselor and Internationalization Coordinator; Mark Anthony Bactong, Office of Student Affairs (OSA) Head; Anthony Michael C. Chua, Faculty Researcher and ICT Coordinator; and Harold John A. Payla, Research Associate of CAPSP.

The training featured sessions facilitated by Dr. Genaro V. Japos, President of the Philippine Association of Institutions for Research, Inc., and Professorial Chair at the Polytechnic University of the Philippines. Discussions focused on high-impact journal publication, including standards, indexing systems, and strategies to improve research visibility. Participants also learned techniques in developing publishable manuscripts, navigating the peer review process, and addressing common challenges in academic publishing.

A key component of the workshop emphasized integrating sustainability and SDG frameworks into research design. Participants were introduced to SDG-oriented methodologies, tools for measuring environmental, social, and governance (ESG) impacts, and strategies for effective research data management. The sessions also highlighted opportunities for international collaboration, networking, and research funding to support SDG-driven initiatives.

Through the training, participants strengthened their understanding of Scopus and ISI publication standards, enhanced their capacity to integrate sustainability principles into research, and developed practical skills in research methodologies and data management. The activity also fostered connections within the research community, supporting greater collaboration and global visibility.

The workshop concluded with a closing program and the awarding of certificates, marking another step in advancing USTP Balubal’s commitment to research excellence and sustainable development.
