Ms. Hannah May H. Ello, PATHFIT Instructor of the University of Science and Technology of Southern Philippines in Panaon, Misamis Occidental (USTP Panaon), participated in OutdoorCon 2026, a four-day national convention and training on outdoor adventure education held from April 28 to May 1, 2026, at Sabangan Campsite and Mt. Kiamo in Malaybalay City, Bukidnon.
Organized by Outdoor Adventure Education Philippines (OAEPhil) in partnership with the University of Southern Mindanao (USM), the convention gathered outdoor educators, physical education faculty members, and adventure education practitioners from across the country to strengthen competencies in outdoor instruction, safety, and environmental stewardship.
As the instructor for PATHFIT 4: Outdoor Adventure Activities at USTP Panaon, Ms. Ello participated in the convention to enhance the University’s outdoor education program. The training focused on updating instructional approaches aligned with current national standards in survival skills, terrain navigation, outdoor leadership, risk management, emergency response, and environmental conservation, including the Leave No Trace principles. The knowledge and skills gained are expected to further strengthen the delivery of the University’s PATHFIT curriculum and promote safer outdoor learning experiences for students.
The convention featured lectures, masterclasses, and field-based training facilitated by experts from leading higher education institutions. Topics included outdoor adventure program design, trail nutrition, knot tying for wilderness survival, tarpology and pioneering, wilderness rescue and first aid, responsible mountain climbing and camping, trail running, compass reading, and orienteering. Participants also applied these competencies during a day hike to Mt. Kiamo and various practical outdoor activities.
The convention concluded with an orienteering competition that assessed participants’ navigation, teamwork, and problem-solving skills. Ms. Ello, together with Ms. Joyce Olebang of the University of the Philippines Mindanao, earned Third Place in the competition.
Ms. Ello’s participation in OutdoorCon 2026 reflects USTP Panaon’s commitment to continuous faculty development and excellence in instruction. The knowledge and best practices acquired from the convention will contribute to enhancing the University’s PATHFIT 4 program by promoting innovative, safe, and experiential outdoor education for students.
