Engr. Efren Pagalan, a faculty member from the University of Science and Technology of Southern Philippines in Claveria, Misamis Oriental (USTP Claveria), shared key takeaways from the seminar “Enhancing Safety in Biological Science Facilities” held on March 25, 2025, at USTP Claveria. His presentation highlighted the importance of laboratory safety, emphasizing rigorous standards and proactive practices in research environments.

He began by recounting his experience at the seminar, where he had the opportunity to learn from experts in the field, including the keynote speaker, Dr. Jose M. Obedencio Jr., Assistant Professor from the Central Mindanao University (CMU). He highlighted the seminar as a vital platform for fostering dialogue and sharing best practices related to biological safety. “One of the key takeaways from the seminar was the urgent need for continuous training and awareness among laboratory personnel. Safety is not just about having the right equipment; it’s about cultivating a safety-first mindset that permeates our entire approach to research.” Engr. Pagalan stated.

Engr. Pagalan also stressed the importance of proper laboratory design and engineering controls, advocating for spaces that minimize risks while allowing for effective research. “Investing in proper design and adequate safety measures can prevent accidents and ensure the well-being of everyone in the facility,” He added.

Among the notable moments of the seminar, Engr. Pagalan mentioned the donation of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) made by Dr. Obedencio, which included coveralls, gloves, and masks. He underscored the significance of such contributions, emphasizing that access to appropriate PPE is essential for maintaining safety standards.

Dr. Dennis A. Mugot, USTP Claveria Director of the Laboratory Management Office, formally received the donated PPE from Dr. Obedencio through Dr. Eric Randy R. Politud, USTP Claveria Vice Chancellor for Research and Innovation.

Engr. Pagalan concluded his remarks by encouraging his peers to embrace a culture of safety in their work. “Each one of us has a role in ensuring our laboratory environments are safe. Let’s commit to sharing knowledge, staying informed, and supporting one another in this vital mission,” he urged.
