Former USTP President Dr. Ricardo Rotoras remembered

He was best known as an educator, scientist and a visionary but to others Dr. Ricardo E. Rotoras was a man after the welfare of the students and his family. On this day, December 2, we remember the life of former USTP President Dr. Ricardo Rotoras who was gunned down in front of his home in Cagayan de Oro City.

Dr. Rotoras or “Ric/Rictors” to those close to him paved the way for the amalgamation of the former Mindanao University of Science and Technology (MUST) in Cagayan de Oro and the Misamis Oriental State College of Agriculture and Technology (MOSCAT) in Claveria to establish the University of Science and Technology of Southern Philippines (USTP)—a feat very challenging for any leader, a true Trailblazer—by virtue of Republic Act 10919.

He was re-elected four times as National President of the Philippine Association of State Universities and Colleges (PASUC) to lead all 111 SUCs of the country. Under his leadership, he introduced various higher education reforms with significant impact to the SUCs in the delivery of their mandate. He was the only University President of the former MUST and was appointed the first USTP System President upon the amalgamation.

Today on his 3rd death anniversary, the call for justice still reverberates.

Ric as I personally knew him was truly a very amiable and down-to-earth person, be it in his official capacity as a topnotch University President or as a personal friend, colleague, classmate, relative or as fraternity brother.

Dr. Pio Baconga
President of Pilgrim Christian College

He was committed to discipline and most of all, to excellence – he was never scared to drop half of the class for not passing the final exam that he gave for Engineering Math on the first year!

Grace Fujimaki
Former Student

He always has time to talk to us and even makes us feel that we are very much welcome in his office. When invited to activities, he never fails to make a connection with the students.

Keno Lamaclamac
Former Student Government President

Ric was generally described as passionate in his teaching, very professional, down-to-earth, open minded, a coach and always a nurturing figure to his students.

He was that type of person who was very sincere in helping others. This has been the trademark of Rictors since our younger years.
