The Technology Promotions and Commercialization Office (TPCO) through its Innovation and Technology Support Unit conducted a seminar-workshop on the Fundamentals of Patent Search and Draft Writeshop to the personnel of the University of Science and Technology of Southern Philippines (USTP) in Claveria, Misamis Oriental on February 16 – 18 and 21, 2022. It was participated by those who were part of the research program in intellectual property (IP) protection practices.

The activity aims to capacitate USTP Claveria faculty and researchers in IP protection practices and maximize the generation of patent and utility model applications.

Engr. Gladdy Christie Compasan, Manager of the Innovation and Technology Support Unit of the TPCO, gave an overview of the prior art search and how they are applied to their respective fields.  She oriented the participants on the different free art search engines in conducting a patent search to determine the novelty and inventive steps of their projects. This will assist them to avoid ‘reinventing the wheel’ and as such have their projects fall within the patentable subject matter.  Engr. Compasan gave them hands-on experience on how to navigate the free art search engines’ databases and read patent documents.

One of the objectives of the ITSO is to improve IP awareness by sharing expertise and training faculty, students, and researchers in matters of IP, patent searching, and patent drafting.  This will eventually lead to more technologies that would be commercialized and transferred to industry partners for public use and at the same time may earn royalties as incentives.
