Known for its rich biodiversity and ecological significance, the Mt. Balatukan Range was classified as the Mt. Balatukan Range Natural Park and declared a protected area on March 6, 2007, through Presidential Proclamation No. 1249. Now, as the celebration of “Mt. Balatukan Day” reaches its 18th year, the University of Science and Technology of Southern Philippines in Claveria (USTP Claveria) participated in a tree planting activity aimed at conserving and restoring the park’s natural environment on March 6, 2025.

The tree planting activity, organized in collaboration with the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR), the Local Government Unit (LGU) of Claveria, and various environmental organizations, underscores the importance of sustainable conservation efforts. Faculty, students, and staff of USTP Claveria, alongside community volunteers, planted hundreds of native tree species within designated reforestation sites to support biodiversity and mitigate climate change.

Mt. Balatukan Range Natural Park, spanning over 8,423 hectares, is home to diverse flora and fauna, including endemic and endangered species. The park plays a crucial role in maintaining ecological balance, serving as a watershed that provides water to surrounding communities and agricultural lands. However, challenges such as deforestation and habitat degradation persist, making initiatives like the annual tree planting event vital for its protection.

USTP Claveria Chancellor Dr. Renato O. Arazo emphasized the institution’s commitment to environmental advocacy, stating, “Our participation in this activity aligns with our mission to promote sustainable development and ecological stewardship. By planting trees today, we are investing in a greener future for generations to come.”
The event also featured environmental awareness discussions led by experts, focusing on the role of forests in combating climate change and the collective responsibility of individuals in preserving natural resources. Participants expressed their enthusiasm and dedication in contributing to the environmental conservation efforts.
