In April 2025, the Pagatpat Community Agriculture Farmers’ Cooperative (PACAFACO) officially received a portable biowaste shredder from the University of Science and Technology of Southern Philippines in Cagayan de Oro (USTP CDO) through the Department of Science and Technology-Misamis Oriental’s (DOST-MisOr) Community Empowerment through Science and Technology (CEST) program. The turnover ceremony was held at the PACAFACO Materials Recovery Facility in Barangay Pagatpat, Cagayan de Oro City.

The shredder is a key output of the project titled “Utilization of Portable Biowaste Shredder Promoting Sustainable Waste Minimization in Barangay Pagatpat, Cagayan de Oro City D1.” Spearheaded by EnP Angelie Azcuna Collera, Head of the USTP Center for Human Development, with Dr. Antonio-Abdu Sami M. Magomnang, Head of the Center for Biomass Energy, as project focal, the initiative aims to enhance PACAFACO’s waste processing capabilities.

With an upgraded design featuring a conveyor belt and higher shredding capacity, the new machine enables PACAFACO to process more household biowaste into compost, which is used in their food gardens or sold as organic fertilizer. This supports both environmental sustainability and community livelihood.

PACAFACO, composed of 79 members, is a partner of the City Local Environment and Natural Resources Office (CLENRO) in implementing Republic Act 9003 or the Ecological Solid Waste Management Act. The cooperative plays a vital role in augmenting the city’s waste management services by collecting, processing, and recycling waste across several barangays, including Canitoan, Bulua, Opol, San Simon, Baikingon, and Lumbia, with expansion plans.

This collaboration and initiative underscore USTP’s commitment to strengthening waste management systems and empowering local farmers through science, technology, and enterprise development.
