Short Film Glory: USTP Oroquieta wins big during the IP Day 2025

The University of Science and Technology of Southern Philippines in Oroquieta, Misamis Occidental (USTP Oroquieta) marked a significant achievement during the 2025 Intellectual Property (IP) Day celebration held on April 25, 2025, at the Dr. Ricardo E. Rotoras (DRER) Memorial Hall, USTP Cagayan de Oro. With the theme “IP and Music: Feel the Beat of IP,” the event, spearheaded by the USTP Technology Promotion and Commercialization Office (TPCO), highlighted the importance of intellectual property and served as a platform to showcase talent, creativity, and innovation across all USTP campuses.
USTP Oroquieta emerged victorious in “The Show” Short Film Contest with its entry “Wakan,” an emotionally resonant piece written and directed by IT Instructor Richard C. Paler. The film follows the story of Melody Wakan, a young singer-songwriter whose rising career takes a dramatic turn after she secretly uses another student’s melody to win a competition. Exploring themes of ambition, integrity, and the consequences of intellectual property theft, the film was brought to life through a collaborative effort involving faculty members, Ma. Liberty B. Doncillo and Jessa Lagura, and students Eusebio Patria, Jude Esidore, Jessa Mona, Ralph Jezron Juab, Roel Yorong, and Redjan Phil Visitacion.
In addition to its win in the film category, USTP Oroquieta also made a mark in the Design Contest with “Patterned Plastic Sheet” by Ma. Liberty B. Doncillo—an innovative, eco-friendly solution that repurposes laminated sachets into functional material. Meanwhile, in the IP Beats Contest, the campus showcased the original jingle “Protellect,” a dynamic composition promoting IP awareness, created by a faculty and student team and led vocally by Sherrie Mae Malinis. The jingle reflects the university’s commitment to embedding IP education in creative expression.
This series of accomplishments underscores USTP Oroquieta’s dedication to cultivating a culture of innovation, integrity, and intellectual property protection. More importantly, these achievements align with the university’s commitment to fostering quality education, promoting sustainable industry and innovation, and encouraging responsible consumption and production.
By empowering students and faculty to creatively address real-world challenges while upholding ethical standards, USTP Oroquieta continues to be a dynamic force in shaping a more innovative, inclusive, and sustainable future.
