Last December 4, 2023, members of the Planning, Monitoring, and Evaluation (PME) from both the University of Science and Technology of Southern Philippines (USTP) Cagayan de Oro and the USTP System conducted their ocular inspection of four ongoing construction sites at the USTP Cagayan de Oro campus. Present for the inspections were PME CDO Director, Ms. Elva Maramara; PME CDO Staff, Ms. Khairon Cañete; PME CDO Staff, Ms. Shienalyn Sayson; SPME Statistician, Ms. Altea Labita; SPME Data Analyst, Ms. Precyfel Jampit; and SPME Technical Writer, Mr. Yohann Abejo.

Guiding and accompanying the SPME and PME CDO staff throughout the inspections were representatives from the Infrastructure Planning and Facilities Development Office (IPFDO): Construction Head, Engr. Vicente Gadiane; and Construction Manager, Engr. Kristine Ann Aspiras.

The group began their inspections at the University Health Center on the campus’s western end. Having started its reconstruction on April 17, 2023, with funding from the General Appropriations Act (GAA) 2023, the rebuilding of the University Health Center is one of the latest projects to be implemented and one of the closest on pace to completion—being a Phase 2 project and 91.98% to completion, in no small part thanks to the labor provided by CDH Builders. It is only a matter of time before the University Health Center can provide for the campus’s health and medical needs once more.

Moving southward to the following project site, the group inspected the eight-story Student Center and Education Complex adjacent to the Cagayan de Oro National Highway. Since having last formally checked the area on June 8, 2023, completion of the project has made steady progress from 19.61% from June 8 to 24.85% last December 4. With the project’s completion slated for March 3, 2024, as a Phase 2 project, progress towards completion is anticipated to advance further in the coming months to ensure that additional environments are provided to enhance students’ learning experience, innovativeness, and entrepreneurship.

The third site the group inspected was the Sports Complex and Residence Building—both being built at the northern end of the campus and handled by a joint enterprise between Arn Builders and DQT Builders. But, given how both are new sites, with only the once marshy grounds cleared for development and a few scaffolding and cistern holes in place, both sites remain at 1.70% of completion. Nonetheless, the future remains bright as students will soon have the facilities to accommodate further their stay on campus, their studies, and their physical health and well-being.

Finally, the group proceeded to their last inspection of the three-story Campus Residence, entering the building and inspecting the layout of the rooms that would soon house students throughout their academic journeys. Being a Phase 1 project with funding from GAA 2021, the site is now 86.81% to completion, and, hence, only a matter of time before USTP CDO could accommodate even more students in need of living space closer in proximity and more conducive to better facilitate their learning experience.

All these projects are part and parcel of the Three-Year Rolling Infrastructure Program for FY 2022- 2024, a critical component of the Strategic Plan: Vision 2030. So, with the steady completion of more of these vital pieces of infrastructure, the University of Science and Technology of Southern Philippines and its community eagerly anticipate how these projects both build up the university’s capabilities and capacities of being a national center for innovation, knowledge-generation, education, research, and academe-industry engagement.
