The University of Science and Technology of Southern Philippines in Alubijid, Misamis Oriental (USTP Alubijid) proudly brought home the 1st Best Paper Award at the recently concluded Philippine Association of Extension Program Implementers, Inc. (PAEPI) International Extension Congress 2025, held at the Del Carmen Convention Center, Siargao Islands, Philippines, on June 10–13, 2025. This year’s congress centered on the theme “Embracing Science and Technology-Driven Extension Platforms for Sustainable and Inclusive Communities.” The event gathered extension practitioners, educators, and researchers from across the country and the ASEAN region to share innovative practices, strengthen collaboration, and recognize outstanding contributions to the field of extension.

The award-winning paper, titled “Practical Data Science for Jail Management and Operations,” showcased USTP’s strategic and impactful community extension work. This project is the result of a collaboration between USTP Alubijid’s Departments of Computer Science, Cybersecurity, and Computer Engineering and the College of Information Sciences and Computing from Central Mindanao University (CMU). Special appreciation is extended to the Bureau of Jail Management and Penology (BJMP) Region X, whose openness, cooperation, and commitment to rehabilitation and lifelong learning made this extension initiative both relevant and transformative.
USTP also proudly presented another collaborative initiative with CMU and the Philippine National Police (PNP) Region X, which focuses on upskilling and capacity-building in the field of artificial intelligence and data science for law enforcement professionals.
The synergy between USTP and CMU reflects a shared commitment to collaborative, responsive, and forward-thinking community engagement, especially in areas where technological innovation can significantly enhance public service and safety.

USTP’s award-winning paper highlights its flagship program, BRIDGE—Bridging Research and Innovations for Community Development through Goal-Oriented Extension Projects. This initiative emphasizes the university’s commitment to addressing real-world challenges through science, technology, and innovation, reaffirming USTP’s leadership role in community development.
