USTP Architecture Faculty receives prestigious Best Paper Award for Dissertation

The University of Science and Technology of Southern Philippines (USTP) is proud to announce the impressive achievement of Dr. Romel Eltanal, UAP, PIEP, PSMPE, MSSD, from the Architecture Department in USTP Cagayan de Oro. He received the Best Paper Award for his dissertation during the recent Commencement Rites at Mindanao State University–Iligan Institute of Technology (MSU-IIT) on June 24, 2025.
Dr. Eltanal, a CHED SIKAP Grant Scholar, completed his Doctor in Sustainable Development Studies (DiSDS) degree with a specialization in Sustainable Urban and Rural Planning (RUP). His dissertation is titled “Advancing Sustainability Transportation Development in Cagayan de Oro City, Philippines: An Investigation of the Public Utility Vehicle Modernization Program (PUVMP).” He conducted the research under the guidance of Joel G. Opon, Ph.D.
Dr. Eltanal’s research focuses on important issues in sustainable transportation development. It specifically looks at how the Public Utility Vehicle Modernization Program is applied and how effective it is in Cagayan de Oro City. This relevant study offers helpful insights for urban planning and sustainable transportation policies in the Philippines. The research supports USTP’s commitment to sustainable development and regional progress. It demonstrates how our faculty members are actively working on solutions for today’s urban challenges.

This achievement highlights USTP’s role as a top institution that produces high-quality research focusing on real-world issues and supporting sustainable development in the region. The Best Paper Award for Dissertation is a well-respected honor given to doctoral candidates whose research shows outstanding quality, creativity, and potential impact in their fields. Dr. Eltanal’s receipt of this award reflects the high academic standards and research excellence promoted in USTP’s programs.
