Ms. Cedric I. Bernaldez, a fourth-year Bachelor of Science in Architecture student from the University of Science and Technology of Southern Philippines in Cagayan de Oro (USTP CDO), secured third place in the OUR HOME Inter-School Furniture Design Challenge: Sofa & Bed Edition. Her design entry titled “Alaaya” emerged as one of the top five finalists from 22 submissions nationwide, earning her a spot on the winners’ podium during the awarding ceremony held on November 14, 2025, at SM Megamall, Mandaluyong, Philippines. Organized by OUR HOME in partnership with Carl Colossal Creations Corporation, the competition aimed to showcase student creativity in furniture design while emphasizing practicality, aesthetic functionality, and spatial comfort.
Ms. Bernaldez managed to secure her entry during the extended registration period upon learning that the competition was open nationwide. The competition moved on to the grueling two-month Manufacturing Collaboration stage, where the five finalists had to collaborate with industry partners to bring their designs into reality. Being the only regional finalist from Cagayan de Oro, Ms. Bernaldez faced significant logistical difficulties since the manufacturing facility was close to Metro Manila. This situation meant she had to rely solely on virtual consultations and the resources available locally. When the initial material selections she had made needed revision to meet the client’s requirements, Ms. Bernaldez proved flexible by immediately looking for and recommending alternative materials that passed the set standards.
Throughout the competition process, she has received support from the institutional level through the Architecture Department, represented by the coordinator, Ar. Kristine Ramay provided invaluable guidance in comprehending the intricacies of this national competition. Her accomplishment reflects USTP CDO’s commitment to developing skilled and competitive professionals in the field of architecture and design.
Keep moving onwards and up, Trailblazer!
