USTP CDO holds SIBOL 2026: CITC student research colloquium and technology demonstration

The College of Information Technology and Computing (CITC) of the University of Science and Technology of Southern Philippines in Cagayan de Oro (USTP CDO) hosted SIBOL 2026: A CITC Student Research Colloquium and Technology Demonstration on February 3 – 4, 2026, at SM CDO Downtown Premier, Cagayan de Oro City.
The two-day event brought together students, faculty members, university officials, and industry guests to witness innovative research outputs and technology-driven solutions developed by CITC students highlighting the college’s growing culture of inquiry, creativity, and innovation.
DAY 1 HIGHLIGHTS
The program formally opened with welcome remarks from Dr. Junar A. Landicho, Dean of CITC, who encouraged students to step beyond the classroom and embrace their roles as emerging researchers and innovators. A ribbon-cutting ceremony followed, marking the official launch of the technology demonstrations and exhibits.
USTP System President Dr. Ambrosio B. Cultura II delivered a keynote presentation titled “Bridging Research, Technology, and Innovation.” He underscored the vital role of research and technology in advancing sustainable development and highlighted key university initiatives, including the establishment of Innovative Service Centers and Offices, Research Centers and Institutes, and the Entrepreneurs Career Path for USTP graduates.

USTP CDO Chancellor Atty. Dionel O. Albina also reaffirmed the university’s commitment to strengthening research and innovation across the campus.
The guest speaker, Mr. Graham Paul Jiminez, Chief Executive Officer of Hyperstacks, Inc. and Committee Chair for Startups of the CDO ICT Business Council, delivered a talk titled “How Student Research Fuels Northern Mindanao’s Innovation Ecosystem.” He shared insights on innovation and entrepreneurship, reminding students that growth is rarely linear. He encouraged them to fall in love with problem-solving, prioritize continuous growth, surround themselves with smart collaborators, and learn from the experiences as well as mistakes of others.

A CITC Fireside Chat, “Forging the Future: Building Partnerships that Drive Innovation and Growth,” brought together college leaders and industry partners, led by Dr. Landicho alongside Engr. Albert Christopher Daniot II, MDS (BS Data Science), Dr. Love Jhoye M. Raboy (BS Information Technology), and Mr. Jerwin S. Borres (BS Technology Communication Management). The discussion emphasized the importance of academe–industry collaboration in aligning academic programs with industry needs and preparing students for future technological challenges.
DAY 2 HIGHLIGHTS
The second day centered on the Student Research Colloquium and Poster Presentation, featuring formal research presentations and project demonstrations by CITC students.
Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs of USTP CDO Dr. Jocelyn Barbosa shared a message highlighting curiosity, collaboration, and action as key drivers of excellence and innovation.
Presidential Assistant for External Affairs of the USTP System and former Director for Research of USTP CDO Dr. Ismael N. Talili delivered a plenary talk titled “Understanding Research: Fear No More,” aimed at explaining research and encouraging greater student participation.

Vice Chancellor for Research and Innovation of USTP CDO Engr. Alex L. Maureal likewise emphasized the importance of cultivating a strong research culture among students.

Student research sessions ran throughout the day, showcasing projects from the Computer Science, Data Science, Information Technology, and Technology Communication Management programs. These were complemented by exhibitions and booth presentations, allowing participants and guests to directly engage with students and explore their research outputs.
SIBOL 2026 concluded with an awarding ceremony recognizing outstanding student research and innovation capping off two days of learning, collaboration, and celebration of CITC’s emerging talents.
