The Department of Applied Physics of the University of Science and Technology of Southern Philippines in Cagayan de Oro (USTP CDO) took a step toward the future of computation on October 30, 2025, through a hands-on demonstration of the nation’s very first quantum computer held at the USTP CDO Campus.
The 2-Qubit Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (NMR) Quantum System from SpinQ, which was shown during the Quantum Information, Science, and Technology Conference in the Philippines (QISTCon.PH 2025), was brought and demonstrated by Mr. Bernardino Buenaobra, Vice President of the Quantum Computing Society of the Philippines (QCSP) and Technical Expert from USTP Balubal Campus.
The session introduced the principles and potential applications of quantum computing, giving faculty and students first-hand exposure to this transformative technology. Discussions highlighted how quantum computing can impact a wide range of fields — from agriculture, where it could optimize resource use and yield, to engineering, where it can improve materials design, logistics, and data analysis.
The event also opened opportunities for future collaborations, strengthening USTP’s commitment to promoting innovation and interdisciplinary research in modern physics, quantum science, and emerging technologies.
