In strengthening education linkages, the University of Science and Technology of Southern Philippines in Cagayan de Oro (USTP CDO) proudly recognized Mr. Japhet Queniahan, a 4th-year Bachelor of Science in Applied Physics, and Mr. Efren Hamoy, Chairperson of the Applied Physics Department from the College of Science and Mathematics (CSM) who both recently participated in an 8-day exchange program for Sakura Science Exchange Program on March 2-9, 2026 at Okayama University, Japan. The program provided participants with valuable international academic exposure and the opportunity to engage in meaningful learning experiences in physics. It also helped strengthen academic and cultural linkages while allowing them to experience advanced scientific facilities and activities in Japan.

During the program, they took part in hands-on activities and laboratory visits, including diffraction grating spectroscopy, measuring Planck’s constant, and observing single photons. They also visited SPRING-8, one of the world’s largest synchrotron radiation facilities, where they were introduced to world-class research infrastructure and advanced scientific applications.

The participation of Mr. Queniahan and Mr. Hamoy marks a meaningful milestone for the BS Applied Physics program, as Mr. Queniahan is the first student from the program to take part in the Sakura Science Exchange Program. Their participation reflects USTP’s support for international academic exposure and serves as an encouraging example for other students who may pursue similar opportunities in the future.

Through opportunities such as the Sakura Science Exchange Program, USTP continues to nurture globally aware, scientifically competent, and research-oriented students and educators
