Innovation and passion for science took center stage as Mr. Clyde Harris A. Saraos, a third-year BS Applied Physics student from the Department of Applied Physics at the College of Science and Mathematics of the University of Science and Technology of Southern Philippines in Cagayan de Oro (USTP CDO), earned the Best Oral Presentation Award in the Physics Demonstration and Concepts Category during the 27th Samahang Pisika ng Visayas at Mindanao (SPVM) National Physics Conference. The conference was held from October 23–25, 2025, at the University of San Agustin in Iloilo City.
Mr. Saraos presented his study titled “Doppler Shift Detection of Interstellar Hydrogen using a Raspberry Pi–Based Radio Telescope,” which demonstrates the use of low-cost materials and microcontroller technology to detect the Doppler shift of hydrogen line (H-line) signals from interstellar space. His work bridges hands-on experimentation with astrophysical concepts, promoting accessible pathways for radio astronomy research and physics education in the Philippines.
The annual SPVM conference gathered physics educators, researchers, and students from across the country to present their studies and foster collaboration in advancing physics research and education.
Mr. Saraos’ recognition brings pride to USTP, reflecting the University’s ongoing commitment to nurturing young researchers and fostering a culture of innovation and scientific excellence that contributes to national development and global competitiveness.
