The University of Science and Technology of Southern Philippines (USTP) participated in a crucial regional consultation that focused on the future of agriculture, fisheries, and forestry (AFF) in Northern Mindanao. This event took place on November 20, 2025, at the Main Conference Room, DEPDev/RDC X Building, Cagayan de Oro City. Key representatives from government, academia, and industry gathered in a spirit of collaboration and respect, contributing valuable insights that will help shape the region’s development priorities.

Representing USTP was Dr. Eric Randy R. Politud, Vice Chancellor for Research, Innovation, and Extension of USTP Claveria, who ensured that the University’s research and innovation priorities were included in the regional discussions.

Hosted by DEPDev-X, the consultation highlighted the region’s urgent AFF concerns, including declining agricultural performance, climate pressures, and low technology adoption. Regional Director Mylah Faye Aurora B. Cariño emphasized the need to revitalize the sector and strengthen Northern Mindanao’s competitiveness in line with its 2040 development vision. Director Jose Apollo Y. Pacamalan of DA-Region X presented updates on the region’s priority commodities and stressed the importance of aligning interventions with local production capacities.

Participants from SUCs, government agencies, private agribusinesses, and development partners worked together through workshops that identified key sector gaps and proposed strategic interventions. These initiatives included establishing research and innovation hubs, enhancing crop insurance, promoting climate-resilient agriculture, supporting young farmers, and improving value chain systems.

Throughout the consultation, Dr. Politud reaffirmed USTP’s commitment to regional development through research initiatives, technology deployment, and capacity-building programs.

The consultation underscored the importance of evidence-based, collaborative action in transforming Northern Mindanao’s AFF sector. Through USTP’s active participation, the University strengthened its role as a partner in advancing a resilient, innovative, and inclusive agricultural future for the region.
