The University of Science and Technology of Southern Philippines in Claveria, Misamis Oriental (USTP Claveria) has strengthened its international academic and industry connections by hosting a specialized training on hoof health and trimming science on November 17, 2025, at the USTP Claveria Dairy Academy. This program was facilitated by Mr. Elbert Gargar, a New Zealand-based expert from Hoofmaster in Temaru.

Organized through the Center for Dairy Research and Innovation (CDRI), the training is part of USTP Claveria’s Internationalization Program. This program aims to build partnerships with foreign experts and institutions to enhance research, instruction, and extension services. The initiative also demonstrates the university’s commitment to advancing sustainable livestock management in Northern Mindanao and beyond.

Nearly 100 participants, including agriculture students, faculty members, dairy workers, and trainees, took part in the intensive program. The training included a balanced combination of lectures, practical hoof trimming sessions, and interactive discussions that emphasized science-based approaches to maintaining hoof health and improving livestock productivity.

Mr. Gargar, a certified hoof health practitioner, shared modern techniques and best practices developed through his extensive experience in New Zealand’s dairy industry. Participants received first-hand exposure to internationally recognized standards in hoof management, disease prevention, and animal welfare.

CDRI believes that the training not only brought global knowledge closer to our students and the agricultural community but also opened new opportunities for collaboration with international experts and institutions. This is a significant step towards integrating world-class practices into local livestock systems.

USTP Claveria continues to pursue its vision of becoming a hub for agricultural innovation and global cooperation. Upcoming collaborations with New Zealand’s dairy and livestock sectors are expected to foster knowledge exchange, technical training, and research partnerships that will enhance dairy farming practices and productivity.
