The University of Science and Technology of Southern Philippines in Claveria, Misamis Oriental (USTP Claveria), celebrated Nutrition Month with a special event highlighting the importance of food security and good nutrition for all Filipinos. The campaign carried the theme “Sa PPAN: Sama-sama sa Nutrisyong Sapat Para sa Lahat!” with the subtheme “Food at Nutrition Security, Maging Priority! Sapat na Pagkain, Karapatan Natin!” The advocacy underscores that a healthy diet should not be seen as a luxury but as a necessity and a fundamental human right that must be unconditionally accessible and available to every Filipino.

During the celebration, Ms. Fides Joy Pabua, RN, Health Services Director of USTP Claveria, delivered a talk at the University Student Lounge as part of a bite-sized session during the Monday Convocation Program. Ms. Pabua stressed that access to affordable, safe, and nutritious food is a basic human right. She emphasized that good nutrition is vital to maintaining health and preventing malnutrition, encouraging everyone to support local farmers, reduce food waste, and cultivate healthy eating habits early in life. She also highlighted the crucial role of breastfeeding.

Ms. Pabua further explained that the campaign calls for collective action to ensure that no one is deprived of proper nutrition. The discussion also addressed the persistent issue of hunger in the Philippines, citing a 2024 FAO report that revealed around 51 million Filipinos experienced food shortages between 2021 and 2023. Nearly 26% of families faced hunger, aggravated by poverty, climate change, and agricultural challenges.

To address these issues, the campaign advocates for better policies, heightened awareness, and stronger cross-sector collaboration to build resilient food systems. The event concluded with a shared breakfast at the university cafeteria, symbolizing unity in the shared goal of achieving a healthier and food-secure Philippines.
Everyone is encouraged to continue supporting initiatives that promote improved nutrition and food security for all Filipinos.
