USTP Claveria champions mental health awareness through suicide prevention symposium

The University of Science and Technology of Southern Philippines in Claveria, Misamis Oriental (USTP Claveria), brought students together for a meaningful and empowering event, the Suicide Prevention Symposium, on November 12, 2025, at the University Multi-Purpose Hall. This initiative aimed to raise awareness, promote mental health, and equip students with practical strategies to prevent suicide and support peers in need.

Organized by the Office of Student Affairs (OSA) in close collaboration with the Guidance and Counseling Services (GCS), the symposium highlighted the university’s commitment to creating a safe and caring environment for all.

Highlights of the Day

Dr. Lindylou M. Yamuta, Director of the Office of Student Affairs, USTP Claveria, warmly welcomed the participants and delivered an inspiring message on the importance of mental health advocacy.

Students engaged in insightful discussions on topics such as:

  • Suicide and Its Impact on Individuals and Communities
  • Identifying Risk Factors
  • Evidence-based Intervention Strategies
  • Maintaining Personal Well-Being While Supporting Others
  • The Guidance Office: Your Safe Space 

The event also featured a focus group discussion where students shared their reflections on the symposium.

Ms. Maricar Y. Valdez, Director of Guidance and Counseling Services, delivered her closing remarks, emphasizing the university’s continued commitment to strengthening mental health programs and ensuring that students have access to the guidance and support they need.
