The University of Science and Technology of Southern Philippines in Claveria, Misamis Oriental (USTP Claveria), through its College of Arts and Sciences and the Extension Relations Office, held a seminar on the Special Protection of Children Against Abuse, Exploitation, and Discrimination Act, or R.A. 7610, on September 5, 2025, in Brgy. Parmbugas, Claveria. The seminar aimed to raise awareness and improve understanding of child protection laws. Participants learned about different forms of child abuse, preventive measures, and the legal protections offered under R.A. 7610.

The highlight of the seminar was the lecture delivered by Ms. Shella F. Trecero, RSW, MSSW, Chairperson of the Bachelor of Science in Social Work (BSSW) program. As the resource person, she discussed the key provisions of R.A. 7610, which focuses on protecting children from abuse, exploitation, and discrimination. Ms. Trecero explained the various forms of child abuse, preventive measures, and the legal repercussions of violations. Using real-life examples and practical guidelines, she equipped participants with the knowledge to identify signs of abuse, implement appropriate interventions, and understand the importance of reporting cases to the proper authorities.

An interactive open forum followed, allowing participants to ask questions and share their experiences, which further enriched the discussion. The session fostered a meaningful exchange of insights on how families, schools, and communities can work together to uphold the rights and welfare of children.

The event was made possible through the efforts of the Extension Associate and the Social Work faculty members from the College of Arts and Sciences. Their contributions in overseeing the registration process, distributing materials, and managing the overall program ensured a smooth and well-organized flow of activities throughout the day.

The seminar not only shared vital legal information but also highlighted the shared duty of families, schools, and communities to keep children safe and cared for. It demonstrates USTP Claveria’s commitment to engaging with the community and its mission to create a safe and nurturing environment for young people.
