The faculty and staff of the University of Science and Technology of Southern Philippines in Claveria, Misamis Oriental (USTP Claveria), led by Chancellor Dr. Renato O. Arazo, participated with the Local Government Unit (LGU) of Claveria in commemorating the 127th Philippine Independence Day on June 12, 2025, at Claveria Old Municipal Hall Grounds. The ceremony was solemn and meaningful, highlighting themes of patriotism, unity, and public service.

Hosted by Mayor Hon. Meraluna Salvalon-Abrogar and Mayor-elect Hon. Reynante L. Salvaleon, the celebration brought together local officials, department heads, Vice Mayor-elect Alfred Azcuna, Sangguniang Bayan members, and representatives from various government and non-government organizations. Under the theme “Kalayaan. Kinabukasan. Kasaysayan. (Freedom. Future. History.),” the program featured a flag-raising ceremony, a wreath-laying tribute, and cultural performances that underscored the importance of freedom and national identity.

In his message, Vice Mayor-elect Alfred Azcuna delivered a powerful call to civic action, saying, “Ask not what your country can do for you, but what you can do for your country—and more importantly, what you can do for Claveria.”

He urged residents to embody active citizenship and contribute to the development of their community. Mayor-elect Reynante L. Salvaleon, likewise, assured the public that the new administration would serve all residents with fairness and dedication.

“We shall serve all constituents, regardless of political color,” he said. “The election is over. It’s time to unite and prove to the 17,000 who placed their trust in us that we are committed to progress.”

Hon. Salvaleon outlined key priorities, including improvements in water access, educational support for students, and agricultural aid for farmers.

Adding depth to the program, Teacher II Regidor Colong gave a reflection, emphasizing that true freedom involves dignity, respect for national identity, and using education to think critically and serve responsibly. “If we lose respect for our nationality, we lose a part of who we are,” he said.

Following the Independence Day ceremony, local officials inaugurated the newly constructed Municipal Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office (MDRRMO) Building. This facility is expected to enhance the municipality’s capabilities in disaster preparedness and emergency response.

The event concluded with a renewed sense of purpose and unity, emphasizing the importance of every citizen, institution, and leader in preserving freedom and fostering a resilient future for Claveria.
