The College of Arts and Sciences (CAS) of the University of Science and Technology of Southern Philippines in Claveria, Misamis Oriental (USTP Claveria), in collaboration with the university’s guidance counselor, Prof. Maricar Y. Valdez, and the social science instructors of CAS, successfully conducted an extension program on September 18, 2025, at Dr. Gerardo Sabal Memorial National High School (DGSMNHS), Claveria, Misamis Oriental. The event aimed at promoting adolescent health and development through a holistic intervention.

The program, titled “Promoting Positive Adolescent Health Behavior and Outcomes: A Socio-Psycho-Spiritual Approach among Families and Schools,” served as a psycho-social intervention aimed at strengthening the well-being of students and bridging support between families and educational institutions.

With the rise of challenges faced by today’s youth—including academic pressure, emotional struggles, and social influences—the initiative focused on instilling positive coping mechanisms, resilience, and values-based decision-making. Sessions were designed to address mental health awareness, spiritual grounding, and family-school collaboration in guiding adolescents toward healthier choices and meaningful futures.

“The activity is part of USTP Claveria’s mandated extension services, which translate academic expertise into community-oriented programs that directly benefit schools and local stakeholders,” said Ms. Jane Tamon, the project leader and coordinator, and also one of the CAS faculty members of USTP Claveria. “By providing evidence-based interventions, USTP Claveria continues to uphold its role in promoting education, health, and holistic development beyond its campus,” she added.

On the other hand, Ms. Kaina Ramonal, during her message, underscored the importance of the socio-psycho-spiritual framework in nurturing adolescents. “Adolescence is a crucial stage where values, beliefs, and behavior are formed. Through this program, we empower students to understand themselves better, manage challenges positively, and strengthen the support system that families and schools provide,” said Ms. Ramonal.

Meanwhile, teachers and students of DGSMNHS, as well as parents, actively participated in interactive group discussions and reflective activities that highlighted career awareness, character formation, and psycho-spiritual grounding. Teachers were also equipped with strategies to support students and parents struggling with emotional and behavioral concerns.

The extension program stands as a testament to USTP Claveria’s core commitment to extension and community engagement, aligning academic service with the pressing needs of schools and families. By fostering collaboration, the university strengthens its impact on youth development, ensuring that education is not only about knowledge but also about nurturing resilient, values-driven individuals.
