USTP Claveria marks 39th commencement ceremony showcasing 667 new professionals

The University of Science and Technology of Southern Philippines (USTP) Claveria reached another proud moment as 667 graduates were conferred their degrees during the 39th Commencement Ceremony held at the campus Multi-Purpose Hall. With the theme “I.G.N.I.T.E. — Innovate, Grow, Network, Inspire, Transform, Engage,” the occasion emphasized the university’s continuing mission to mold graduates who are not only competent in their chosen fields but also mindful of their responsibility to lead, serve, and create positive change in their communities.

The ceremony began at the university oval with a hooding ceremony led by Vice Chancellor for Student Affairs, Dr. Argin A. Gulanes, and Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs, Dr. Alexander L. Ido, symbolizing graduates’ transition from students to professionals ready to lead and innovate.

 

This was followed by a processional march led by the colors, featuring the candidates for graduation, honor guards, members of the faculty and staff, members of the Administrative Council of the Campus, special guests, college deans, vice chancellors, vice presidents, the university registrar (with the mace of the chancellor), the chancellor, members of the Board of Regents, the commencement speaker, the board secretary (with the mace of the president), the USTP system president, and the chairperson of the Board of Regents, culminating in the conferral of degrees to graduates, after the formal opening of the session and presentation of candidates for graduation by USTP Chancellor Dr. Renato O. Arazo. 

Graduates received diplomas across diverse programs, including 1 Ph.D. in Animal Science, 3 Master of Science in Agriculture, 81 Bachelor in Agricultural Technology, 24 Bachelor of Science in Agroforestry, 27 Bachelor of Technology in Horticulture Management, 27 Bachelor of Technology and Livelihood Education in Agri-Fishery Arts, 120 Bachelor of Science in Social Work, 39 Bachelor in Food Processing and Technology, 17 Bachelor of Science in Agricultural and Biosystem Engineering, 57 Bachelor of Science in Environmental Engineering, 54 Bachelor of Science in Hospitality Management, and 5 Bachelor of Science in Information Technology. 

In his address, President Cultura congratulated the graduates, emphasizing faith, community, and service as guiding principles. He challenged them to “ignite”—to innovate, grow, network, inspire, transform, and engage—as they step into roles as catalysts for positive societal change, especially as USTP approaches its centennial in 2027.

Guest speaker Dir. Jose Apollo Y. Pacamalan of the Department of Agriculture-RFO X shared his inspiring journey of resilience and urged graduates to support local farmers, promote sustainable practices, and develop programs that benefit indigenous communities. 

He emphasized mastery and excellence as the true sources of job security and encouraged graduates to become agents of innovation and change.

A pre-recorded message from CHED Chair Dr. Shirley Castañeda Agrupis reminded graduates that the true value of education lies in service, integrity, and leadership. 

Valedictorian and Summa Cum Laude Glen Mark O. Salvaña highlighted resilience and perseverance, inspiring peers to face future challenges with strength and integrity.In his valedictory speech, he stressed to his fellow graduates that “graduating is not just a personal achievement; it is our most profound victory—a testament to our strength, perseverance, and unwavering hope.” 

Having undergone various challenges throughout his academic journey, he said that “Innovation isn’t always a breakthrough invention. Sometimes, it’s figuring out how to survive three-hour sleep cycles, beat two sets of deadlines, and still show up—at work, at school, and for yourself.” Thus, he urged his peers to face future challenges with resilience and uphold integrity and service. Finally, he ended his speech with a strong declaration: “We leave USTP-Claveria transformed—honed by challenges and ready to engage fiercely with our full potential.”

Magna Cum Laude Josefina Shaje Gaguan led the Graduate’s Pledge, encouraging fellow graduates to embody excellence and responsibility. Hon. Gerum O. Salatan, Member, Board of Regents/President, Federation, led the Alumni Pledge of Commitment, encouraging graduates to remain dedicated to their communities and uphold the university’s core values. The event finally concluded with the singing of the USTP Hymn, led by Dr. Gulanes, and the official closing by Chancellor Dr. Renato O. Arazo.

Celebration and Entertainment

Following the ceremonies, a testimonial dinner featured performances by the Kalasi Dance Troupe, celebrating the graduates’ achievements and recognizing everyone’s hard work and dedication in reaching this important milestone.
