In a remarkable display of academic collaboration and institutional synergy, the University of Science and Technology of Southern Philippines in Claveria, Misamis Oriental (USTP Claveria), through its College of Agriculture and the Mindanao State University–Sulu (MSU-Sulu), formally entered into a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) on October 23, 2025, held at the Office of the Chancellor, USTP Claveria. The MOU signing marks the beginning of a strategic partnership aimed at strengthening both institutions’ mandates on instruction, research, extension, and production.
The visiting delegation from MSU-Sulu, headed by Chancellor Dr. Nagder J. Abduraman, included Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs Dr. Rafael A. Ragellana, Dean of the College of Agriculture Dr. Alwajir O. Tutum, and several faculty representatives. Representing USTP Claveria were four vice chancellors led by Dr. Dennis T. Yamuta, Vice Chancellor for Finance and Administration, who served as Officer-in-Charge on behalf of Chancellor Renato O. Arazo, currently attending the USTP Board of Regents Meeting in Quezon City. Joining him were Dr. Alexander L. Ido (Academic Affairs), Dr. Eric Randy R. Politud (Research, Innovation, and Extension), and Dr. Argin A. Gulanes (Student Affairs and Services), together with Dr. Charly G. Alcantara, Dean of the College of Agriculture, executive assistant, department chairpersons, coordinators, and a representative from the Strategic Communication Office.
During the ceremony, Dr. Abduraman proudly presented the institutional profile of MSU-Sulu, highlighting that the university boasts ten colleges, with the College of Agriculture being the largest in both student population and budget allocation. The campus, located in Jolo, Sulu’s provincial capital, is home to over 8,000 college students and more than 300 faculty members and staff. He emphasized the progressive and peaceful atmosphere of MSU-Sulu, nestled amid the province’s pristine beaches and vibrant tourism destinations. The Chancellor also noted that the university attracts students from Manila, Zamboanga City, and other regions across the Philippines, given its proximity to Sabah, Malaysia, and its growing reputation for academic excellence and cultural hospitality.
Meanwhile, USTP Claveria officials expressed their heartfelt appreciation to the MSU-Sulu delegation for initiating this collaborative endeavor. The hosts presented the university’s milestones, including its accredited academic programs, ISO-certified operations, and dynamic faculty and staff profile. They also highlighted the institution’s local and international research linkages, student and professional networks across Mindanao, and the various innovation-driven projects and tourism initiatives that make USTP Claveria a leading model of a sustainable and technology-oriented campus in Northern Mindanao.
The event concluded with a campus tour, where the MSU-Sulu team visited USTP Claveria’s modern agricultural facilities, research centers, and flagship projects. Both institutions expressed optimism that this partnership will open more doors for knowledge exchange, collaborative research, and community development initiatives—a shared commitment that underscores their mission to empower Mindanao through education, innovation, and sustainable agriculture.
