The University of Science and Technology of Southern Philippines in Claveria, Misamis Oriental (USTP Claveria) took the opportunity to reflect on important topics covered in “Bite-Sized” lectures during the first Monday Convocation on April 7, 2025. The session was a thoughtful revisit of discussions aimed at enhancing students’ academic, social, and professional awareness.

One of the major highlights of the event was a reflection on “Women’s Empowerment and Leadership Development,” originally presented by Dr. Lindylou Yamuta, Director of USTP Claveria Office of Student Affairs. Ms. Joy E. Pepania, an Instructor from the College of Arts and Sciences of USTP Claveria, shared her insights on this important topic. She emphasized the significance of empowering women by allowing them to shadow transformational leaders and creating an environment in which young women feel confident in pursuing their goals. The lecture highlighted how leadership development programs can inspire future generations of women to break barriers and create positive change in their communities.

Another significant lecture discussed during the convocation was “Media Literacy,” presented by Engr. Val Irvin Mabayo from USTP Claveria. Engr. Mabayo introduced the audience to the pressing issue of information disorder in the digital age, breaking down three main types of misleading content: misinformation, malinformation, and disinformation. His talk emphasized the importance of critical thinking and the necessity for students to develop skills to distinguish between reliable, “real” news and unreliable, “fake” news or sources of information online.

Ms. Gia Cuizon from the USTP Claveria College of Agriculture also shared her reflections on the topic, highlighting the role that media literacy plays in fostering an informed and responsible student body. She stressed the importance of verifying reliable sources of information before accepting them as true.

The convocation also revisited the culmination of National Women’s Month, which included a series of empowering talks and activities focused on women’s health, leadership, and community building. A key program, “Serbisyo para kay Juana,” was highlighted for its provision of essential health services to women, emphasizing the importance of health in empowering women to lead fulfilling and productive lives. Ms. Karen Lucino, USTP Claveria University Registrar, shared reflections from the culmination event that underscored the significance of women’s health, empowerment, and community outreach.

These concise lectures, discussed during the convocation, demonstrated the university’s commitment to providing relevant and impactful learning experiences for its faculty, staff, and students. The convocation concluded with a powerful reminder that learning is a continuous process and that these topics will remain significant as the faculty, staff, and students of USTP Claveria continue their educational journey.

Through this thoughtful reflection on past sessions, USTP Claveria reinforced its role in shaping informed, responsible, and empowered individuals who are ready to contribute to society.
