USTP conducts 2022 systemwide Research Summit

As part of its vision to become a nationally recognized Science and Technology University providing the vital link between education and the economy, the University of Science and Technology of Southern Philippines (USTP) – through the Research Office of USTP Cagayan de Oro (CDO) – conducted a systemwide research summit on September 22-23, 2022.

The theme for this year’s research summit is “Rebuilding a Resilient Community for a New Normal through Multidisciplinary Research.”

Students, faculty, and staff from across the USTP System gathered at the Dr. Ricardo E. Rotoras (DRER) Memorial Hall to formally open the two-day activity.

Dr. Mylene M. Uy, the Director of the Premier Research Institute of Science and Mathematics of MSU-Iligan Institute of Technology, served as the keynote speaker during the opening ceremony.

Dr. Maria Sheila K. Ramos, the Director of the Knowledge and Technology Transfer Office and the Dean of the College of Engineering and Technology of MSU-Iligan Institute of Technology gave a plenary speech on the topic “Intellectual Property and Utilization: The Challenges Facing Universities in Today’s Knowledge-Based Economy.”

The two-day activity showcased various poster presentations of scientific papers focused on the following summit streams:

  • STREAM A: Food Safety, Productivity, and Security
  • STREAM B: Science and Technology Education
  • STREAM C: Natural Sciences
  • STREAM D: Industrial Development, Energy Sufficiency, Infrastructure, and Transportation
  • STREAM E: Information and Communication Technology
  • STREAM F: Humanities and Social Sciences

The opening program ended with a discussion on the mechanics and criteria for the oral and poster presentations.

Dr. Ambrosio B. Cultura II, USTP System President, and the keynote speaker, Dr. Mylene M. Uy, then led the ribbon-cutting ceremony for the poster presentation of scientific papers on the ground floor of the Engineering Building. Alongside them were Atty. Dionel O. Albina, USTP Cagayan de Oro Chancellor, and Dr. Ismael N. Talili, Research Office Director of USTP CDO and this year’s Research Summit organizer.

In the afternoon, participants were ushered into breakout rooms for the simultaneous oral presentation of scientific papers.

The first breakout room was composed of participants from Streams A (Food Safety, Productivity, and Security) and B (Science and Technology Education). It was held at the Performing Arts Theatre of the Engineering Complex at USTP Cagayan de Oro.

The second breakout room was composed of participants from Streams C (Natural Sciences) and D (Industrial Development, Energy Sufficiency, Infrastructure, and Transportation). It was held at the AVR of the ICT Building at USTP Cagayan de Oro.

The last breakout room was composed of participants from Streams E (Information and Communication Technology) and F (Humanities and Social Sciences). It was held at the AVR of the ITB Building at USTP Cagayan de Oro.

The following cash awards were given to the best poster and best paper presenters from each summit stream:

For BEST POSTER

  • 1st Prize – Php 2,000 + Certificate
  • 2nd Prize – Php 1,500 + Certificate
  • 3rd Prize – Php 1,000 + Certificate

For BEST PAPER

  • 1st Prize – Php 3,500 + Certificate
  • 2nd Prize – Php 2,500 + Certificate
  • 3rd Prize – Php 1,500 + Certificate

The awarding ceremony was held at the Performing Arts Theater of the Engineering Complex at USTP Cagayan de Oro.
