USTP Jasaan conducts first research colloquium highlighting tech-driven solutions

The University of Science and Technology of Southern Philippines in Jasaan, Misamis Oriental (USTP Jasaan) successfully held The Research Colloquium 2025, themed “Innovate Forward: Collaborative Research for Resilient and Tech-Driven Societies,” on October 28, 2025, at the USTP Jasaan Covered Court.
The event marked a historic milestone as the first-ever research colloquium at the institution, initiated by Research Head Engr. John Mikel M. Acma. This significant event underscores the university’s ongoing commitment to academic excellence and innovation.
Participants included fourth-year students from the Bachelor of Science programs in Naval Architecture and Marine Engineering, Technology Communication Management, Information Technology, Energy Systems and Management, and Manufacturing Engineering Technology. Guided by expert judges from both academia and industry, these students showcased their research posters and innovative solutions through knowledge and creativity.
In Category A: Engineering and Technology Solutions, one research study stood out, earning multiple distinctions. Titled “Design and Development of a Solar-Powered Portable Stop-and-Go Traffic Light Management System for Road Construction,” the study triumphed as the Best Poster, Best in Innovative Solution, and Best in Poster Presentation awards. The project impressed judges with its practical design and dedication to sustainability, offering a cost-effective, environmentally friendly approach to managing road construction traffic.
In Category B: Information and Communications Technology, the Best Poster award was given to the study “Developing a Mobile Application to Empower Corn Farmers with Comprehensive Service Solutions,” a project aimed at improving agricultural productivity and connectivity among local farmers.
The Best in Innovative Solution awards were conferred on three outstanding projects: “GUARDEYE: Transforming Asset Oversight – Development of a School Property Monitoring System,” “Residents’ Perception on the Use of Documentary Films as a Tool for Dengue Prevention in Jasaan, Misamis Oriental,” and “Product Awareness and Purchasing Intentions for Local Products in Tagoloan, Misamis Oriental, Philippines.”
The Best in Poster Presentation award was given to “GUARDEYE: Transforming Asset Oversight – Development of a School Property Monitoring System.” These research initiatives highlighted the students’ creativity, analytical skills, and dedication to community-driven innovation.
The winners of the 2025 Research Colloquium have set an inspiring example of how academic research can transcend theory to make tangible contributions to both industry and society. Their success reinforces the institution’s commitment to fostering a culture of inquiry, collaboration, and excellence—where ideas are not only developed but transformed into impactful solutions for a better future.
The Overall Committee Chair, Engr. John Mikel Acma, who oversaw the entire event, expressed his sincere gratitude to all committee members and sub-committee chairpersons for their dedication and teamwork, which led to the successful execution of the colloquium. Engr. Acma also extended his heartfelt thanks to Jhonrel B. Camelotes, Michelle Pagaspas-Arnan, Mike Jhun P. Calderon, Hanif Macaindig, Nevel Taurine C. Auxilio, Dr. Annabel L. Nambatac (Plenary Speaker), Juvy Mae I. Vincent, Cherry Pink G. Silagan, and Neljohn Michael Acenas, each of whom played a pivotal role in overseeing the Program, Marketing and Promotion, Registration and Tabulation, Invitation, Logistics, Sponsorship and Fundraising, Hospitality, and Documentation and Publication Committees.
Moreover, he further expressed his sincere appreciation to Dr. Ruel S. Salvador, Acting Campus Director of USTP Jasaan, for his steadfast guidance and wholehearted support throughout the planning and execution of the colloquium. Dr. Salvador’s leadership and encouragement were vital in fostering a spirit of collaboration and excellence among the organizing committees and participants.
“This success is truly a collaborative effort that reflects USTP Jasaan’s commitment to quality, excellence, and research-driven education,” Engr. Acma remarked. He emphasized that the success of the 2025 Research Colloquium signifies the University’s continued dedication to advancing academic innovation and solidifying its reputation as a hub for knowledge, creativity, and research excellence.
