In celebration of Women’s Month, the University of Science and Technology of Southern Philippines in Jasaan, Misamis Oriental (USTP Jasaan), successfully conducted an extension project on March 21, 2026, titled “Fiberglass Innovation: Boatbuilding, Education, and Repair (Phase I) for Inclusive Boatbuilding Practices,” in Barangay Bobontugan, Jasaan, Misamis Oriental. The initiative aimed to equip local fisherfolk with the knowledge and skills needed to adapt to modern boatbuilding technologies, particularly the use of Fiber Reinforced Plastic (FRP). Participants from the Bobontugan Small Fishermen and Livelihood Association (BSFLA) actively engaged in the activity.
The program featured seminars on Philippine maritime laws, an introduction to FRP materials, environmental considerations, and safety practices. Through lectures and group discussions, participants gained a deeper understanding of modern boatbuilding techniques and the proper handling of fiberglass materials.
The project was led by Engr. Dweena Maye V. Zamora, together with faculty members Engr. John Carlo U. Ranoco, Engr. Juvy Mae I. Vincent, Engr. Jeramae L. Gemarino, Engr. Roxette Ann L. Osmil, and Engr. Hannah Dale L. Tacastacas, who facilitated the training sessions and discussions.
This initiative highlights USTP’s commitment to community development by empowering local fisherfolk through sustainable and innovative boatbuilding practices.
