The Naval Architecture and Marine Engineering (NAME) Department of the University of Science and Technology of Southern Philippines in Jasaan, Misamis Oriental (USTP Jasaan), once again demonstrated its commitment to innovation and maritime safety after receiving a Certificate of Meritorious Achievement from the Worldwide Ferry Safety Association during the International Student Design Competition for a Safe and Affordable Ferry 2026. This international recognition highlights the capability of USTP Jasaan’s Naval Architecture and Marine Engineering students to compete at a global level. It reinforces the university’s commitment to developing future maritime professionals who prioritize safety, innovation, and sustainability in vessel design.

The USTP Jasaan NAME team was led by Team Captain Oliver M. Pacaña Jr., with members Reynel Dayot, Jericho Tabamo, Cedi Villaruz, and James C. Roa, under the mentorship of Faculty Advisor Engr. John Carlo U. Ranoco. Their entry, MV TSARO (Registration No. 2616), received high praise from the international panel of judges. Although the team was not among the top three awardees, the judges noted that the project ranked highly among global submissions, meriting special recognition for its outstanding quality and technical rigor. According to the judges’ feedback, MV TSARO distinguished itself as the submission with the most explicit and disciplined approach to safety and security among all participants.

The Meritorious Achievement award serves as a milestone for the NAME Department and as inspiration for future student engineers to continue pursuing excellence in maritime research and design. Through MV TSARO, USTP Jasaan demonstrates that Filipino maritime talent is ready to contribute innovative and safety-driven solutions to the global ferry industry.
