The University of Science and Technology of Southern Philippines in Oroquieta, Misamis Occidental (USTP Oroquieta), through its Department of Food Processing Technology and the Campus Safety and Security Office, in partnership with the Bureau of Fire Protection (BFP)—Oroquieta Station, successfully conducted a campus-wide fire safety drill on May 6, 2025. The activity underscores the University’s commitment to proactive safety measures as it prepares for accreditation as an Assessment Center for technical education and skills certification.

The drill commenced with an orientation at the USTP Oroquieta Covered Court, where BFP officers led an engaging and informative session. Topics included fire classifications, the proper use of extinguishers, evacuation protocols, and critical fire prevention strategies—particularly relevant to food processing laboratories, where flammable materials and heat-based equipment are frequently used. The session was tailored to equip students and staff with the knowledge needed to respond effectively in fire emergencies.

Following the lecture, participants calmly evacuated buildings during a live fire drill simulation, assembling at designated safety zones. The BFP team demonstrated the proper use of extinguishers and supervised hands-on participation, reinforcing both theory and practical skills. Simultaneously, BFP inspectors evaluated the campus’s fire safety infrastructure, examining exits, emergency tools, and compliance with existing safety regulations. Preliminary feedback was encouraging, with commendations and suggestions for enhancement.

Through the success of this initiative, the Department of Food Processing Technology at USTP Oroquieta reaffirms its dual focus on academic excellence and institutional safety. As it moves toward becoming an accredited assessment center, the university ensures that its facilities, personnel, and learners are equipped with the knowledge and preparedness needed to uphold a safe and secure educational environment.
