The University of Science and Technology of Southern Philippines in Oroquieta, Misamis Occidental (USTP Oroquieta) hosted the Provincial Level Walang Gutom Kusinero: Cook-Off Challenge on February 16, 2026 at the Food Laboratory, USTP Oroquieta. The event was organized by the Provincial Government of Misamis Occidental (PGMO) through the Provincial Social Welfare and Development Office (PSWDO) and the Provincial Nutrition Action Office (PNAO). This activity aligns with the Walang Gutom Program of the Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) which aims to combat hunger by promoting access to healthy, affordable, and sustainable meals among Filipino families.
Participating municipalities from across the province demonstrated their culinary expertise and creativity by preparing nutritious dishes inspired by the “Pinggang Pinoy” concept, a guide that promotes balanced meals composed of appropriate portions of vegetables, fruits, rice, and protein. Beyond showcasing cooking skills, the competition emphasized practical solutions to food insecurity, highlighting the lived experiences of program beneficiaries and encouraging the use of locally sourced, cost-effective ingredients to ensure sustainability in everyday meal preparation. LGU Sapang Dalaga emerged as Champion, followed by LGU Ozamiz City as 1st Runner-Up, LGU Bonifacio as 2nd Runner-Up, and LGU Calamba as 3rd Runner-Up.
The event underscored USTP Oroquieta’s commitment to community engagement and nation-building through education and partnership. By providing its facilities and academic support, the campus strengthened collaboration among local government units, nutrition advocates, and community stakeholders. The Cook-Off Challenge not only celebrated culinary talent but also advanced a shared mission of fostering food security, promoting proper nutrition, and supporting sustainable food practices in Misamis Occidental.
