USTP Oroquieta, PSA strengthen LGU data capacity through statistics training

The University of Science and Technology of Southern Philippines in Oroquieta, Misamis Occidental (USTP Oroquieta) successfully conducted a Training on Basic Statistics in partnership with the Philippine Statistics Authority (PSA) Misamis Occidental on March 4–6, 2026, at Le Bistro, Plaridel, Misamis Occidental. The activity aimed to equip LGU statisticians and planning officers with fundamental statistical knowledge and skills necessary for effectively preparing, analyzing, and presenting reports in their respective municipalities, particularly in support of the government’s Community-Based Monitoring System (CBMS).

The three-day training commenced with a welcome message from Ms. Georgette F. Gayomali, PSA Supervising Statistical Specialist, who warmly welcomed the participants and expressed her optimism for the success of the training program. Mr. Rosell John Gabi, PSA Senior Statistical Specialist, followed by presenting the training rationale, he underscored the importance of strengthening the statistical capabilities of local government units to support evidence-based planning and informed decision-making.

Serving as resource speakers were faculty members from USTP Oroquieta, namely Ms. Jessieca Hornejas, Ms. Romelyn Quizo, and Engr. Shik Harvey Gaabucayan and Ms. Marevel Caburnay. Throughout the training, participants engaged in a series of lectures, interactive discussions, and hands-on workshops designed to deepen their understanding of statistical concepts and enhance their ability to apply these tools in local governance, development planning, and data reporting.

The training concluded with a closing message from Engr. Mark Bornales, PSA Statistical Specialist II, who expressed his appreciation to the resource speakers and participants for their active engagement throughout the sessions. He highlighted the value of the training in enhancing the statistical competencies of LGU personnel and acknowledged the collaborative efforts that made the program successful.

More importantly, the activity underscored the vital role of extension programs in bridging academic expertise with community and government needs. By empowering LGU personnel with essential statistical skills, USTP Oroquieta continues to promote data-driven governance and sustainable development in the province.

This initiative reflects the university’s commitment to its mission of delivering inclusive education, research, and extension services that contribute to regional and national development.
