The General Education Course (GEC) Service Unit of the University of Science and Technology of Southern Philippines (USTP) in Panaon, Misamis Occidental, successfully conducted SALAMISIM: Revisiting Philippine Culture through Dance, Literature, and Music at the USTP Panaon Function Hall last June 3, 2023.
Salamisim is a culminating activity that shows the depth of Filipino dance, literature, and music. Participating in the event were students from across all programs of the USTP Panaon taking Art Appreciation, Life and Works of Rizal, Philippine Indigenous Community and Peace Education, and Retorika. The participants engaged in sabayang-pagbigkas competitions, retro-dance, chorale, cultural dance, play, and cultural-food presentation.
Salamisim is a Tagalog word that implies “vague memory” (malabong alaala), according to Diksyunaryo ng Wikang Filipino (1998). The culminating action teaches students of this new generation to never lose sight of their culture and heritage despite the advancement of technology and outside influences. The event ended with the declaration of winners and the presentation of certificates to each participant.
