The University of Science and Technology of Southern Philippines in Panaon, Misamis Occidental (USTP Panaon), duly represented by Dr. Leny Q. Anasco and Marjho Mae S. Cardoza, together with government officials and stakeholders, convened for the 1st Quarter Protected Area Management Board (PAMB) Meeting for the Baliangao Protected Landscape and Seascape (BPLS) on March 4, 2026 at the BPLS Pavilion, Misom, Baliangao. USTP Panaon highlights the growing partnership between the academe and environmental management bodies in ensuring the use of science-based approaches to protect the natural heritage of Northwestern Mindanao.
Presiding over the meeting was Mr. Rey Fernandez, the Provincial Environment and Natural Resources Officer (PENRO) of Misamis Occidental. Also in attendance were the Protected Area Superintendent (PASu) officer, Alson D. Potutan, and other members of the management board. Mr. Fernandez led the board through the various agenda items, particularly on the presentation of the findings of the regular Biodiversity Management System, proposed improvements, and repair of the BPLS facilities.
Ms. Cardoza proposed to the management board the possible creation of the Marine Biodiversity Information Center to highlight the unique species and their status, making it easier for visitors to the area to access. Dr. Anasco made a proper motion to the board on this matter and further proposed creating “canned videos” for inclusion in the province-wide tourism promotions.
The involvement of USTP Panaon is seen as vital to integrating academic research and community extension programs into the broader BPLS strategy, ensuring that policy decisions are informed by the latest scientific data and educational initiatives through the widest dissemination of information, thereby fostering greater awareness among local constituents and visitors.
