Two faculty members from the University of Science and Technology of Southern Philippines in Panaon, Misamis Occidental (USTP Panaon) participated in the 2025 CSSP Extramural Training Seminar for Social Science Teachers, held from April 24 to 26, 2025, at the Pilar Herrera Lecture Hall, University of the Philippines Diliman, Quezon City.
Jan James G. Arañas and Darfe Mae D. Dando joined educators nationwide in exploring the intersections of ethics, artificial intelligence (AI), and knowledge production in social science research. The three-day seminar aimed to equip participants with critical tools to navigate AI-driven methodological shifts, ethical dilemmas, and evolving research paradigms in the digital age.
Throughout the event, discussions emphasized the ethical risks of AI, including algorithmic bias, data privacy, and the marginalization of vulnerable communities in research. Through case studies and interactive sessions, attendees examined strategies to uphold integrity and equity in academic inquiry. Mr. Arañas and Ms. Dando actively engaged in dialogues on AI’s transformative impact on knowledge creation, addressing pressing concerns such as digital misinformation and the democratization of scholarship. The seminar reinforced the vital role of educators in fostering ethical, human-centered research practices among students.
Integrating AI literacy into the curricula encouraged participants to promote critical digital engagement while maintaining academic rigor. The training underscored the necessity for continuous adaptation to technological advancements, positioning social science teachers as key advocates for responsible research in an AI-driven world.
Following the seminar, the USTP delegates returned with enhanced perspectives on ethical AI integration, ready to apply these insights in their classrooms and contribute to socially responsible research in Misamis Occidental and beyond.
The event underscored USTP’s commitment to providing faculty development and training to improve the university’s academic landscape.
