The University of Science and Technology of Southern Philippines in Panaon, Misamis Occidental (USTP Panaon), shared critical findings on coastal ecosystems at the 2nd International Agri-Life and Bioresource Sciences Symposium held on February 26-27, 2026, at the University of San Carlos (USC) Talamban Campus, Cebu City. This year’s theme, “Advancing sustainable agri-life and bioresource technologies across borders”, brought together researchers, industry leaders, and policymakers to discuss innovative solutions to global challenges in agriculture and bioresource sciences. USC organized the event with Hiroshima University and Visayas State University, with participants from various parts of the Philippines and abroad.
Ms. Marjho Mae S. Cardoza, a faculty member of the Marine Biology Department, presented research titled “Environmental gradients shape macrobenthic invertebrate assemblages through species turnover across intertidal plots.” The paper investigates how environmental gradients influence the distribution and composition of macrobenthic invertebrate communities in coastal ecosystems, highlighting the importance of understanding these processes for maintaining ecosystem health and supporting conservation planning. T
his work is a key output from the system-wide research project “Biodiversity Assessment of Terrestrial and Aquatic Ecosystems in USTP Campuses.” Dr. Cordulo P. Ascaño II led the project and was actively edited by Dr. Angelo Mark P. Walag, contributing to the study’s rigorous analysis and presentation. The collaborative project aims to establish a baseline biodiversity database across USTP’s campuses, ultimately supporting conservation efforts and sustainable resource management across the university.
Ms. Cardoza’s participation highlights the university’s goal of strengthening international engagement by contributing to global scientific dialogue, showcasing high-caliber research from USTP, while bringing back valuable insights to enhance the university’s academic programs. This commitment reinforces its role as a key educational institution in Northern Mindanao and beyond.
