A team from the University of Science and Technology of Southern Philippines in Panaon, Misamis Occidental (USTP Panaon), participated in a non-competitive Technology Pitching for Licensing and Adoption event during the Regional Science, Technology, and Innovation Week (RSTW) celebration on October 1, 2025, at the Bayfront Arena in Oroquieta City, Misamis Occidental.

The USTP Panaon team, consisting of Mary Cris J. Gemoros, Christopher R. Balaba, Jed Anthony A. Ceballos, and Mary Jane A. Moralia, successfully presented their research titled “Composition for Producing Charru Mussel (Mytella strigata) Kropek Enriched with Turmeric (Curcuma longa).” With the tagline “Crunch for a Cause, Flavor Without a Pause,” their presentation showcased a creative and sustainable solution to the ecological challenge posed by the overabundance of the invasive charru mussel.
By transforming this marine pest into a protein-rich, value-added food product, the team addressed both environmental concerns and food innovation while integrating the health benefits of turmeric into a marketable snack.
As the lead presenter, Ms. Mary Jane Moralia effectively communicated the technology’s potential for commercial adoption and its relevance to community-based livelihood programs. The pitch received positive feedback from evaluators and attendees, highlighting the team’s commitment to science-driven solutions.

USTP Panaon’s participation in RSTW marks a significant milestone, demonstrating how research and innovation can be harnessed to create purposeful and impactful technologies.
