The University of Science and Technology of Southern Philippines (USTP) marked its 7th Charter Day on August 15, 2023, with an event that not only celebrated its journey of education but also unveiled a bold commitment to environmental stewardship — the launching of the Reforestation Program.

The occasion commenced with a tree planting activity. It was graced by esteemed USTP officials, including USTP President Dr. Ambrosio B. Cultura II, who unveiled a determined plan to bolster the campus’ commitment to environmental sustainability.

President Cultura announced the launch of a new committee dedicated to spearheading USTP Alubijid’s Reforestation Program. This initiative is part of the university’s broader efforts to contribute positively to the environment and reinforce the campus’s green initiatives, firmly rooted in supporting the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

Heading this reforestation program will be Dr. Greg M. Cubio, Director of the Research Center and Institutes (RCI) of the USTP System and Head of the Center for Bamboo Research and Innovation. During the event, USTP officials supported the reforestation initiative by actively engaging in discussions about its implementation. Various proposals were put forward, indicating the determination of the committee to make a lasting impact.

Among the proposals was installing a solar drip irrigation system for the campus’s main power supply and ideas revolving around sustainable water management to harness local water sources for USTP’s water supply. This innovative approach aligns with the reforestation program and demonstrates the university’s commitment to resource optimization and ecological balance.

In addition to the reforestation project, the gathering served as a platform to deliberate on potential income-generating ventures for the future main campus of the USTP System. Attendees discussed various possibilities, exploring ways to harness the campus’s resources for environmental and financial gains.

The tree planting event and subsequent discussions symbolize USTP’s unwavering dedication to sustainable growth, environmental consciousness, and community engagement.

As USTP embarks on this noble journey, the echoes of the 7th Charter Day celebration serve as a reminder of the university’s enduring commitment to shaping a greener and more prosperous future for generations to come.
