The Commission on Higher Education (CHED) through Commissioner Jo Mark M. Libre, DPA, organized an online session titled “Anti-Hazing: Philippine HEIs Perspectives, Challenges, and Opportunities” on April 24, 2023, at the University Student Lounge at USTP Claveria.

The online forum was held to address the issues concerning hazing and school violence in higher education institutions (HEIs), which surfaced with the reported deaths of students from Adamson University and the University of Cebu due to the said issues.

During the forum, Commissioner Libre asked the various representatives of HEIs in attendance to tackle hazing, which he strongly emphasized was an “outdated and barbaric tradition” that schools should confront.

“We must create a safe environment with our learning spaces, and I challenge all HEIs to do so.” Commissioner Libre stated. “We must create a safe and supportive environment for our students to come forward and report hazing incidents without fear of repercussions,” he added.

Justice James Lee Cundangan, Assistant Solicitor General, also spoke at the conference, focusing on hazing and the possible actions to help fight violent behaviors in schools.
