The Naval Architecture and Marine Engineering (NAME) department of the University of Science and Technology of Southern Philippines in Jasaan, Misamis Oriental (USTP Jasaan) demonstrated its prowess by securing the 2nd place in the Professional Category of the Boat Design Contest hosted by the Maritime Industry Authority (MARINA) at Okada Manila, last June 1, 2024.

The event marked MARINA’s first-ever boat design contest, organized as part of its 50th founding anniversary celebration. The competition aimed to showcase innovative and sustainable boat designs that could revolutionize the country’s maritime industry.

The USTP Jasaan team, consisting of Engr. Darryl F. Abapo, Engr. Raymond C. Espina, and Engr. Dweena Maye V. Zamora impressed the judges with their design of the M/V JeepSea. Their design incorporated the vibrant spirit of Filipino culture by drawing inspiration from the iconic Philippine jeepney, blending classic jeepney aesthetics with modern engineering.

This remarkable achievement not only honors USTP Jasaan but also underscores the potential of Filipino engineers to contribute to advancements in the global maritime industry. The M/V JeepSea design exemplifies how cultural heritage can be seamlessly integrated into modern technology, paving the way for more creative and sustainable solutions in marine transportation.
