The University of Science and Technology of Southern Philippines in Oroquieta, Misamis Occidental (USTP Oroquieta), joined in the “USTP From Research to Public Impact: A Training Workshop in Science Communication” held on September 17–18, 2026, at Mallberry Suites Business Hotel, Cagayan de Oro City. The two-day training workshop focused on strengthening participants’ skills in communicating research and scientific information to diverse audiences.
Among the participants were Ms. Marevel B. Caburnay and Dr. Jessieca C. Hornejas, who took part in the training-workshop organized under USTP’s Research, Innovation, and Extension. The activity covered audience analysis, message development, communication channels, public engagement, science journalism, policy communication, social media, artificial intelligence, and communication planning.
On its first day, the workshop tackled the foundations of science communication, including the importance of research impact, bridging science and society, addressing misinformation, and understanding science communication theories and models. Participants also engaged in activities on audience mapping and developing key messages for target audiences.
The second day shifted to the practical application of science communication strategies. Participants explored traditional and social media, policy communication, and community engagement platforms. They also learned about news values, identifying story angles, and using the inverted pyramid structure in communicating research through journalism.
The participation of USTP Oroquieta Campus in the training workshop provided an opportunity to translate research into clear, accessible, and audience-centered communication. The activity reinforced the importance of effectively connecting research with communities and other stakeholders to broaden its reach and public impact.
