The University of Science and Technology of Southern Philippines in Panaon, Misamis Occidental (USTP Panaon) conducted Brigada Baybayon 2026: Coastal Cleanup and Ocean Stewardship Campaign on May 8, 2026 at Punta, Panaon, Misamis Occidental, in celebration of World Ocean Day, reaffirming its commitment to environmental stewardship and marine conservation. The activity brought together faculty members, staff, and students from the Bachelor of Science in Marine Biology and Bachelor of Science in Information Technology programs, alongside personnel from the City Environment and Natural Resources Office (CENRO) of Oroquieta City.
The collaborative initiative focused on reducing plastic pollution along the coastline of Barangay Punta, Panaon, Misamis Occidental, while promoting environmental awareness and responsible ocean stewardship.
As part of the program, Mr. Darwin Macalisang of CENRO Oroquieta City conducted an orientation on the proper use of the Ocean Trash Data Form. Participants were trained to document waste categories, the number of sacks collected, and the estimated weight of marine debris, providing students with hands-on experience in marine litter monitoring while generating data to support environmental management initiatives.
The cleanup activity collected 35 sacks of waste, with an estimated total weight of 108.5 kilograms, from the coastline of Barangay Punta. The initiative highlighted the importance of community participation in addressing marine litter and protecting coastal ecosystems that sustain marine biodiversity and local livelihoods.
Through Brigada Baybayon 2026, USTP Panaon strengthened its commitment to environmental sustainability by integrating community service, experiential learning, and collaborative action. The initiative reflects the University’s continuing efforts to promote environmental responsibility and encourage collective action toward the protection and conservation of the country’s marine and coastal resources.
