The Bachelor of Science in Marine Biology (BSMB) students of the University of Science and Technology of Southern Philippines (USTP) in Panaon, Misamis Occidental, are in one with the call of the Local Government Unit of Panaon, headed by Hon. Mayor Meriam Lasta-Paylaga, in engaging continuous sustainable effort in enhancing marine biodiversity and combat the depletion of natural coral reefs.

The students and their instructor, Mr. Jared S. Gomonit, installed five (5) artificial coral reefs last December 12, 2023, in a strategically chosen location within the coastal waters of Panaon, Misamis Occidental, to ensure maximum impact on the local marine ecosystem. The initiative is one of the many groundbreaking efforts of USTP towards a more eco-friendly and sustainable marine biodiversity.

These artificial reefs were crafted from a combination of concrete, PVC pipes, and recycled bottles, representing a novel approach to reef restoration. The class carefully selected materials used in the construction to mimic the natural habitat of coral reefs, providing a conducive environment for marine life to thrive. As the artificial coral reefs settle into their new underwater homes, the project’s success will pave the way for similar initiatives in other coastal areas.

The initiative aims to protect and rehabilitate the local marine ecosystem. It serves as an educational landscape for students to engage more while enjoying their stay as BSMB students of USTP. Furthermore, the sustainable efforts of the USTP Panaon demonstrate the importance of community engagement and innovative solutions in addressing environmental challenges, offering hope for the future of marine conservation.
