Ms. Maria Doreen Cuevas-Rañada, faculty member of the Department of Technology Communication Management (DTCM) at the University of Science and Technology of Southern Philippines in Cagayan de Oro (USTP CDO), received the Best Research Paper Award during the 6th International Conference on Engineering, Social Sciences, and Humanities (ICESSU) held on April 27–28, 2026, in Manila, Philippines.
She earned the recognition for her study titled “Remix and Resistance: Memetic Editing and Participatory Culture in the 2022 Philippine Presidential Election TikTok Campaigns.”
The research examined how TikTok was utilized in digital political campaigning during the 2022 Philippine presidential election. The study identified two contrasting approaches: one that relied on simple, community-driven content that fostered authenticity and participation, and another that used highly polished and professionally edited videos that appeared organic despite indications of coordinated production.
The study highlighted TikTok’s dual role as both a platform for genuine public engagement and a tool for organized political influence, underscoring the platform’s growing impact in shaping political narratives in the digital age.
Carrying the theme “Empowering the Next Generation: Technology and Education for Achieving Global Sustainability,” the conference gathered researchers, academicians, industry experts, and students from various disciplines to exchange knowledge, present innovations, and strengthen interdisciplinary collaboration.
The conference was organized by IFERP Academy in partnership with the Department of Science and Technology – National Capital Region. Academic partners included Jose Maria College Foundation, Inc., Cor Jesu College, Inc., Rizal Technological University, and the University of Science and Technology of Southern Philippines.
