USTP Alubijid faculty members attend CHED, SAUP workshop for HEI Peace Educators

The Commission on Higher Education (CHED) Region 10, in partnership with the Southeast Asian University Partnership for Peace Building & Conflict Transformation (SAUP), conducted the two-day activity “Workshop for Strengthening the Capacity Building Among Peace Educators of the Higher Education Institutions in Region 10.” The event occurred last July 19-20, 2023, at the Pearlmont Hotel in Cagayan de Oro.

USTP Alubijid faculty members Ms. Sarah Kaye Visande and Ms. Kimberly Maratas represented the main campus in the event. Delegates from other SUCs and private higher education institutions joined the two-day event.

The event was conducted following RA 7722, or the “Higher Education Act,” and the CHED Memorandum Order (CMO) No. 1 series 2019, or the “Integration of Peace Studies/Education into Relevant Higher Education Curricula,” that aim to attain a just and lasting peace in the country, leading to sustainable development.

According to CMO 1, s. 2019, all public & private higher education institutions “may offer Peace Studies/Education in their respective curricula through, but not limited to, any of the following: a) integrate/incorporate with other subjects such as history, social sciences, sociology, political science, management, humanities subjects; or b) offer as an elective subject.

The event benefited peace educators by bringing a deeper understanding of the importance of integrating peace education into the curriculum and other related courses. During the workshop, the presenters introduced many teaching approaches and strategies that peace educators could apply to their respective class discussions.
