The Guidance and Counseling Services of the University of Science and Technology of Southern Philippines in Cagayan de Oro (USTP CDO) conducted a two-day training program for its Listening Buddies on June 9–10, 2026, aimed at strengthening peer support services and promoting student mental health and well-being.

The training opened on June 9 with the session titled “Sustaining the Care: Mental Health First Aid Skills for Listening Buddies”  held at the Cafeteria Function Hall. Facilitated by Dr. Meryclyn L. Tanog, RGC, PhD. The session equipped active Listening Buddies with foundational Mental Health First Aid (MHFA) skills to help them provide safe, compassionate, and responsible peer support to students experiencing emotional distress. The training also emphasized the importance of self-care, resilience, and maintaining healthy boundaries while serving as peer supporters.

On June 10, newly recruited Listening Buddies participated in the “Foundational Support Skills Training for New Listening Buddies” at the College of Medicine ITB-AVR. Led by Ms. Tessaly V. Saquin, RGC, the training focused on developing essential communication, active listening, and empathetic response skills. Participants were also guided on ethical considerations, recognizing personal limitations, and creating safe, non-judgmental spaces where fellow students can seek support and understanding.

The two-day activity reflects USTP’s commitment to fostering a supportive campus environment by equipping student volunteers with the knowledge, skills, and values necessary to promote mental health awareness and peer well-being within the University community.
