USTP Claveria promotes disability inclusion through faculty-led learning session

The University of Science and Technology of Southern Philippines in Claveria, Misamis Oriental (USTP Claveria) strengthened awareness of disability inclusion and equal opportunity through a bite-sized learning session conducted during the University’s Convocation Program on July 13, 2026.
The session was facilitated by Ms. Donita Rose Magdato, Instructor I of the College of Arts and Sciences (CAS) Social Work Program, who discussed the importance of creating an inclusive and accessible learning environment for persons with disabilities (PWDs).
Opening the session, Ms. Magdato emphasized that disability should not define a person’s potential, encouraging members of the University community to foster a campus culture where everyone has equal opportunities to learn, participate, and succeed.
“Disability does not define a person’s potential. Opportunity does,” Ms. Magdato said.
The discussion introduced participants to the two major categories of disabilities: apparent disabilities, which are readily visible, and non-apparent disabilities, which may not be immediately recognized but can significantly affect a person’s daily functioning. Participants also learned that disabilities extend beyond physical impairments to include learning disabilities, mental health conditions, psychosocial disabilities, and chronic illnesses, highlighting the importance of empathy and understanding in supporting individuals with non-apparent disabilities.
Ms. Magdato also discussed key Philippine laws that uphold the rights of persons with disabilities, including the Magna Carta for Persons with Disabilities (Republic Act No. 7277), Republic Act No. 9442, Republic Act No. 10754, and the Mental Health Act (Republic Act No. 11036). She explained that these laws promote equal access to education, employment, healthcare, public services, and reasonable accommodations while protecting individuals from discrimination
Highlighting the role of higher education institutions in advancing inclusive education, she underscored the importance of providing accessible facilities, reasonable accommodations in instruction and assessment, and responsive guidance and counseling services. She also encouraged the University community to cultivate empathy, respect, and inclusion in everyday campus interactions.
The learning session formed part of USTP Claveria’s continuing efforts to promote disability awareness and strengthen an inclusive campus environment that upholds equal opportunities and respect for the dignity and rights of all members of the University community.
