USTP Claveria students win the 26th Philippine Statistics Quiz - Misamis Oriental Provincial Elimination

Team USTP Claveria bagged several awards during the provincial elimination round for the 26th Philippine Statistics Quiz in Misamis Oriental, which was held on October 19, 2022, at the Chali Beach Resort in Cugman, Cagayan de Oro City. A total of eighteen (18) participants competed, representing the province’s six (6) colleges and universities.
The following students from USTP Claveria ranked in the highly competitive statistics quiz with three qualifying and final rounds:
- 3rd Place – Carl L. Achame (BSA-1)
- 5th Place – Abe Isaac A. Galendez (BSA-1)
- 6th Place – Dianne A. Placibe (BTLEd-1)
According to the rules, the top five highest cumulative scores obtained by all contestants during Rounds 1 and 2 (consisting of 1 point per question per round) will advance to Round 3 or the final round (with 2 points per question). All three USTP Claveria contestants finished third and advanced to the final round.
USTP Claveria ended as the overall top scorers with a cumulative score of 32. USTP Cagayan de Oro came in second place with 28 points. Meanwhile, Bukidnon State University – Talisayan Campus and St. Rita’s College of Balingasag tied for third place with 27 points.
The top three individual winners qualified for the Region X Elimination Round, which will be held on November 14, 2022 in Cagayan de Oro City, with USTP Claveria’s Carl L. Achame finishing third, along with the winner, Xaviery Bos E. Agsalan of Saint Rita’s College of Balingasag, and the second placer, Mr. Timothy James Acenas of Bukidnon State University – Talisayan Campus.
The contestants’ knowledge and skills in basic and applied statistics, as well as general information on facts and figures of statistical data in the province, region, country, and world, were put to the test. The three rounds were very progressive, combining identification, application, and critical analysis to test the contestants’ mental abilities.
Apart from representing Misamis Oriental in the regional level, each of the three winners received a plaque, trophy, and gift packs. All participating schools received certificates for their participation.
Team USTP Claveria expressed their gratitude to the USTP Claveria administration, led by the campus’ ever-supportive Chancellor, Dr. Renato O. Arazo. Special thanks to the coaching team from the College of Agriculture, especially the accompanying coaches: Vincient C. Erro, Jaymark M. Lantud, and Renalyn D. Ordiz for their perseverance in reaching out to these students and their dedication beginning with the college elimination.
This national annual contest intends to evaluate the students’ competency and skills in statistics acquired through their secondary education curriculum. It also aims to promote, enhance, and instill awareness, appreciation, and importance of statistics among students. Aside from that, the activity is designed to generate public awareness on the importance of statistics in all development-planning activities. The event also aims to win overall support for government statistical activities.
The event is the 26th project in a series organized by the Philippine Statistics Authority (PSA) nationwide in collaboration with the Philippine Statistical Association, Inc. (PSAI), with all provincial eliminations. The 25th edition was held in 2019, with the 2020 and 2021 editions canceled due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The Organizing Committee of the Provincial Statistical Office of Misamis Oriental spearheaded this prestigious event.
